Institutional logics and the adoption and implementation of remote patient monitoring

Remote patient monitoring (RPM) of chronic diseases represents a care modality with great potential to substantially improve outcomes and reduce hospital admission costs society. Empirical research has examined the processes RPM adoption implementation; however, implementation – complex technological health service innovation remains challenging. Various analytical frameworks have tried understand conditions for successful other healthcare innovations. This conceptual study argues that incorporation lessons from literature on institutional logics could enrich these frameworks. Healthcare is domain influenced by multiple competing, collaborating or co-existing such as professional, state, market, corporate increasingly community logic, expressed in patient-centred principles. We outline concept an emerging logic explore how incorporate it into two widely used frameworks, NASSS (‘non-adoption, abandonment, scale-up, spread, sustainability’) normalisation process theory (NPT). The main benefit adding approach NPT framework primarily increase awareness at meso-and macro-levels may affect scope micro-level.
